During the massacres of East European Jews that followed the 1917 Russian Revolution, Judy’s paternal grandmother, Feiga Shamis, was forced to abandon 2 of her children, who were sent as orphans to South Africa. Feiga’s 40-page letter to Judy’s father and aunt, given to her father 20 years later by his mother, inspired the first in-depth, scholarly documentary on the pogroms: My Dear Children by US film-maker LeeAnn Dance. Following the screening of the 75-minute documentary, Judy will share the story behind the letter and the film and reflect on the legacy of her father, Mannie Shamis.
