In 2016, people living in Gauteng with intellectual disability and mental disorders were moved to unregistered facilities, and 141 died. How could this happen in a caring democracy? I discuss how discrimination, which has links to Nazi policies, allows us to deny personhood and ultimately the right to live, to marginal groups.
