Much of the political and religious rhetoric about Jerusalem ignores the reality for the people living there. East Jerusalem is home to 200,000 Palestinians, who enjoy rights and benefits as residents of Israel, but are subject to various measures to maintain "the demographic balance" between Israelis and Palestinians in the city.
